" Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Timid nose that doesn’t show a lot right now except for a savoury, almost wild note. Shy palate of tangy fruit and beautiful, fine-grained tannins and a long strawberry and sour-cherry finish. Poised and elegant." 17.5 Points Walter Speller, Jancisrobinson.com

From the old Michet clone ripened on 6,000 square meters of land with nearly fifty year old vines. Drastic thinning and meticulous care of the vineyard, located in a subarea called Ravera in Monforte d’Alba, allow to reach full maturity and to harvest usually in early October

Destemmed grapes ferment without inoculated yeasts and without sulfur for about a month. Ageing takes place for 24 months in 400 litres barrels and then in about 2,000 bottles produced.

Ferdinando Principiano is one of the new crop of exciting young winegrowers to farm Piedmont's Langhe hills. He graduated from Alba's Scuola Viticole Umberto-1 in 1993, joining his father Americo at the Monforte d'Alba domaine following an apprenticeship at both Giacomo Conterno & Roberto Voerzio; the best of both worlds you could say. The former drove his determination to produce a pure and balanced style of Barolo, persuading him that nurturing the vineyard soil and rejecting the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides gives the correct conditions for the vine to thrive in. Voerzio taught him tradition for its’ own sake does not necessarily give you the best results.

Initially seduced by the '90s fashion for making supped-up wines that 'guaranteed' 100 point scores in American magazines, Ferdinando changed direction in 2003 when he found that these same wines proved undrinkable, falling over with age. Now the yields are not so low; the vineyards rich with wildlife; the roto-fermentors removed; his foot off the gas. The fermentations are shorter and the ripening period extended when desired in his now all-organic vineyards.
