This is the sixth vintage release of Cartology. When I tasted the range of wines with Chris in May, he commented that everyone was moaning about the harvest conditions, although the vintage had proved to be relatively kind to Alheit, even if it had been extremely dry with uneven ripening, even on the same vine. Chris took the strategic position to pick the most important Cartology parcels first at the potential expense of the other vineyards he buys grapes from. In 2015, there were a total of 80 barrels of Cartology - the largest - and easiest vintage to make to date. By the end of the 2016 ferments, there were 69 barrels, however he’d had to acidify around 30 of these casks and ended up selling them off in bulk. Not an easy decision, given the cost of the raw materials. Regardless, the 2016 retains constant in both vineyard sites and blend, with 11% of Franchhoek Semillon added to the core of Chenin.

Alheit Vineyardsis perhaps the most highly sought after wine from South Africa. Small, ancient, dry-farmed vineyard plots of Chenin Blanc & Semillon have been tracked down and nurtured to produce their wines. The wines are made by Chris & Suzaan Alheit in their winery in Hemelrand, Hemel & Aarde Ridge, Walker Bay, surrounded by fynbos, olive groves & lavender. The grapes are cooled, carefully hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice is lightly settled, run off into old oak barrels and then left alone for the wild yeasts to enjoy. Once fermentation sets in, each barrel is monitored daily. All these wines are limited in production and sell on allocation.
