Beaujolais and the Rhone

These are Doug's notes as posted!

First stop ... Paul Jacquesson
Aligote. Nice and fresh drink in 6 months
Bouzeron aligote more rich and decent. All 6,7,8 yo oak
Gresi ny  lovely drinkable style. 20% new oak hardly shows Aa it's well judged drink now+
la pucelle. Delicious, more mineral and length. Granitic schalk rather than just chalk
Champonniere redvillage rully 08 juicy fresh lovely barrel style. Drink now unless it closes down
Les cloux 1er. Much more tannin and power, yet still v drinkable. Will last a few years but can have now with food
Mercurey naugue   Prob best vineyard in mercurey. Even more structure but lovely purity of fruit and tasty
Pucelle 04. Rounder and creamier but still mineral and yellow fruit amnnd pear. Sweet and still has time to go.

Yves Cuilleron
Roussanne 08 quite yeasty...
St Joseph 08 100% rousanneoldbarrels
Quitehigh acid ok
Marsanne 08. Much rounder. V nice gentle peche. Lavender?
St peray. White only appelation of 62 ha. 20% new oak. 9 mths. Quite intense but not showing brilliantly
Viognier 08. 8 months old oak. Still herbs with White nectarine. 9000b
V good
Condrieu les chaillets 08. Really well balanced White peach and spice like cinamin and vanilla pod. Good length
Syrah rose.  Nice Provence style light peppery fruit. Fine but exp
Syrah 08. Very leafy peppery   Mot my style
Syrah candives. Best areas. V peppery but more fruit. Cool. Try 07
Ripa sinistra 07. Means left bank. All reds are 18months except vdp which are 9. 50% new Planted in 01. Nice ripe fruit but don't get the price.
St j l amarybelle. 18 m in barrique 50% new. Nice, still peppery but goodfruit backup
St j les serines. Best parcels. V intense some liquorice. Best so far prob worth having. V fresh with dark choc
Cote rotie madiniere ( name of river) 3 parcels. More ripe black fruit coming through
Cornas 07. V ripe, quite soft. Coffee espresso v rich. Too big? 90 yo vines

All use no pesticides or Insecticides

Phillipe Faury 17 ha
St j w 07 60%mars and rous 30% goes for 11 months in old oak
V primary nose, pears etc. Good apricot on finish. Decent wine but not oaky
Condrieu 1000cs 10% new oak,30% barrel altogether. Good with goats cheese. V primary nose of vin clair with hint of brioches. Palatte long with nice toasty long finish
Condrieu la Berne 25% new oak 25% old. Much longer, peachier and creamier. Tasty Wine
St joseph rouge. 07. V herby with nice fruit but moving towards toomuch pepper but nice ripe finish
St j gloriette. 600l barrel25% new. V peppery. Crunchy red fruits. Raspberry

Cote rotie 2 ha. Firstvintage 1996
Like above but with more ripe expressive fruit. V expressive and open with a rich almost port like finish. Elegant style

Fayolle
Crozes w. 08Sens No barrels nice light honey note. Good fresh acidity. Mars/rous
Crozes w. 08Les pontaix 20% barrel. 60yo marsanne. Apparently should be drunk at 5-6 years. More richness and guava. Fresh, nice
Hermitage 07. Dionnieres 60 yo marsanne. Much more honeyed. Sometimes miss acidity due to soil, but this retains it. Lovely richness with guava and pear and honeysuckle. Good length too
Crozes hermitage. Sens08. Fresh straightfwd crozes
Les pontaix 07. Fwd red fruits more tannins. Maybe raspberry and bramble

Ch clos les cornirets 07. 60yo syrah 7500 v/h. Best of the day so far. 12 m barrique new-4 yo. Granite soil gives thin tannins. Perfect balance of tannin fruit minerality And red/black fruit. Some liquorice and espresso too 08 good too, perhaps less body which makes acidity show more

Bernard Faurie
St j 07. 2 ha. Proper serious stuff. Provence herbs and rich black fruit with spicy white pepper
Hermitage 07. La meal is one of the vineyards. V pure. Coffee beans with v fine tannins and v balanced v ripe fruit. Real proper wine. 15% new oak

Vincent Paris
St j 08 v fresh acidity decent fruit
St j 07. Much blacker fruit with lovely gentle Garrigue and spice with black pepper
Granit30 07. More Garrigue and bramble fruit. Nice
Granit 60 07. V intense. More dark fruit  High acidity. Herbs come through strongly with cherry character
La geynale cornas 07. 200 yo vines. Half ha. Super intense black fruit with Garrigue. Quite mineral and fine grained. Bit of a brooding monster really


Raquillet 08
Lute raisonee. No fertilizer or insecticide. 10ha. His reds are all from single vineyards and distinctive in style. 05 still available, 07 tasted
White
Rully 1er gresigny. Negoce. Mineral and rich with good level of creaminess
Rully 1er brigadiere. More lime and lean still with good mineralogy and length

Red mercurey 07
1er cru les vases
Lovely oak with red fruits and good length. Modern. S facing slope
1er les naugues
More power and length. Intense modern red fruit with almond paste
1er les veleys
W facing. More rustic style. They say mineral style I say earthier or touch dirtier if I was being harsh.

Young guy and family working vineyards
Macon la Roche 08
V fresh. Too much acidity at present. 07 is drinking well apparently
St veran 07. Vg wine. But only 1000b. Round and with ripe peach
Mlr vv 07. Some younger oak. Nice balance of acidity and oak and yellow fruit with subtle honeysuckle.
Bourgogne rouge 07. No barrels. Good cocn of fruit. Quite crunchy, some richness and wArmth too. Orange spicy nose to

Dom Grand Cour ab (biodynamic)
Fairly crazy guy, jean-louis detraive who only speaks loud, certified from 09. Best 08 of trip. More serious but very drinkable style of fleurie.

08. Intense cherry perfumed nose. Gentle and silky palate with lots of fruit. Barrels and foudre used.
08vv. More closed. Heavily structured and some more oak blueberry apparent.

07. Super
07 vv. V complex, beyond fleurie in depth and richness.
08 champagne. 25% new oak and the balance older. 3000b. Incredible soft full rich tasty wine with bramble, blueberry, milk choc and roast herbs. Special.


Dom la Chaponne Morgon
Open top fetmenters and then crushed and then under floor to finish fermentation. Just him and his Wife 10ha. 8 in cote puy, the top rated vineyard.

06. Juicy. Nice structure. More Pinot style.n m
08 futs de chennes. Lovely blueberry oak nose. Good ripe character on pallate. A worthy style.
06 cuvee Joseph. Super blueberry fruit. Cracking lively juicy fruit.
03 STD. Stunning like a Beaune Pinot with super length and freshness. Really rich ripe fruit. Fabulous wine
96 STD. Wow. Still good but like aged Pinot

Dom de la Madonne
Has best situated vineyard at top of hill just under chapel. Run with wife and son. When we arrived first grapes of vintage were coming in.
08. Utterly pretty perfumed nose with violets and cherries
Vv 08. Just more Intense nose. Perfumed and peppery
08 niagra.  More structured. Crunchy red fruits but still nice top notes of violets. Pepper in there too
07 grille midi. One parcel facing hot. Nice but need to move from cuvee. Excellent length and cocn though
niagra  07. V powerful Nose. Drier and more structure and extract.
Niagra 06. Complex red fruit nose with roasted herbs. V complex pallate. Lovely
Cuvee prestige 06. Vanillin nnotes onnose. Roasted herbs and luquorice with aniseed too. More like s Italian good
90 lamadonne. Gamey. Old Pinot nose. Energetic wild strawberry too. Good length with meaty beefy palatte but still with fresh macerated raspberry. V good
