About Us
who - what - why

WoodWinters was founded by three wine and whisky loving friends; CaraDoug and Mark. We met while judging at the International Wine Challenge (the largest wine competition in the world) and have travelled the world working, tasting and developing our passion for good wine.

Our wines are all chosen on the premise they offer something of interest; whether near extinct varieties or beautifully crafted examples of more well known grape varieties, they are made by some of the most dynamic wine makers from all around the world and we believe offer superb value for money – how ever much you want to spend.

Our whiskies are single cask single malt and packaged in elegant 35cl bottles from each of the classic regions – range to be expanded soon.

Who?

Shane Dunning - Having spent eight years in the wine trade in London (La Reserve) and Edinburgh (Valvona & Crolla) , Shane joined the team in September with a passion for wines from all over the world but especially those of France and the USA. Shane’s previous experience was in fine wine retail and wine education; including events and training to the public, companies, and to the hotel and restaurant trade. Originally from deepest darkest Somerset , Shane loves mountain-biking and snowboarding and does not chew straw or know how to drive a combine harvester.

Douglas Wood - originally from Stirling, Douglas has worked all over the world for major companies where possible multi-tasking and always learning about wine. He began trading in fine wine nearly 10 years ago and since moving to Bridge of Allan, made it his goal to open a wine shop. He plays squash for Bridge of Allan and enjoys all sports.

Cara Wood(née Winters) - originally from Northern Ireland, Cara studied Physics at Edinburgh University (1992 - 1996) where she met Douglas. After teaching spells in Manchester and London, she became a Mum to Erin and moved back to Scotland. Now Mum to Felix as well, she directs the team's enthusiam and shares their passion for bringing interesting wines to Central Scotland.

Mark Protheroe- An Australian on extended honeymoon in UK. Having won Wine Spectator Awards for his restaurant wine list in Australia, Mark arrived in this country to be closer to the centre of the wine world (London). He worked as a sommelier for Gordon Ramsay at his 3 Michelin star restaurant before moving to Scotland to persue his other passion - football. Honeymoon now over, mark is currently on his way back to Australia via the vineyards of Europe and watch this space for his future endeavours ...

What?

We are still working on the exact wording ... something like 'to increase the pleasure experienced by our customers both buying and drinking our wines & whiskies'

As a company and as individuals, we value:
Ethical, quality focussed producers
Fun and a sense of adventure when buying wine
Accountability for the quality and value of every bottle that we sell
Honesty in all  transactions
Education and interaction with all customers via the shop or the web
Environmental responsibility
Charitable causes - 1p per bottle sold going to charity
Openness, self improvement & always welcome feedback

Why?

Our palates are all different and on any given occasion, we would all choose something quite different to drink. For a wine to make it onto out list we all have to consent which means that we believe we have a very balanced list representing a comprehensive range of tastes. We can confidently state that every wine on our list has a time and place …

A picnic lunch on the beach for the Trebbiano
A barbequed steak with Andy for the Corvina
A well earned breakfast in bed for the Prosecco
A birthday party for the Gremillet

A Tuesday night with the TV for ... Andes Peakes Carmenere
A Christmas Turkey with the family for the Sparkling Shiraz
A Friday night steak with the girls at CHAMBO for the Seghesio Zinfandel
A roast chicken dinner with Colin and Clare for the Viognier
